Course Description (BIB1052): A thorough study of John’s Gospel, blending pastoral and scholarly concerns.
The introduction analyzes such matters as authorship, date, structure, and purpose. Attention is given to the
legal language in John, and his methodology of writing for a verdict. The study continues with an exegetical and
homiletical journey through each paragraph of the Fourth Gospel. Abundant endnotes reflect interaction with
commentaries by Godet, Morris, Bruce, Carson, Keener, and Köstenberger. Beyond exegesis and answering basic
hermeneutical questions, the course identifies timeless, cross-cultural principles in each subdivision—and then
explains, illustrates, and applies each principle. Interactive questions guide students in learning for the head, heart,
and hands. Case studies and illustrations challenge students to apply the principles of John in life situations today.
